Giants of Steam - Day 2

A cleaning turn today, which was fortunate in having better weather than yesterday.  After all the cleaning was done, and preparation for the next day had taken place, I ended up involved in yet another project, and assisted the group of people who were doing some work on the tender of the Brighton Atlantic project.

So, after the recent crash course in concrete track, here is one in hot rivetting......

hot
First, the rivet is cut to length (makes the arms ache after a while...).  It is then heated until cherry red

placed
The rivet is then put in place, and held in place (in this case using a pneumatic expander)

hit it!
To form the head of the rivet, a pneumatic hammer is used

finished
Job done!  The slightly uneven nature of the head on this rivet is due to the impossibility of holding the hammer perpendicular to the rivet with the chassis frame on the right being in the way

fave
Not too sure, but I think this is my favourite of the day, or maybe the one of 80151 on the bridge later?  Make your own mind up by viewing today 's pictures
